Ride

Africa is a very special place, but Africa on horseback is truly magical. The sound of thundering hooves, a pall of dust and the splash of water as the herd gallops into the yard - there are some things that bring a smile to your face no matter how many times you see it.

A great holiday for those riders wishing to experience the pleasure of riding with African wildlife in the absence of dangerous game. Rides are tailor-made to suit the needs of each guest and are as flexible as possible, with a herd of over 90 horses they can cater for all levels.

Horizon Horseback has a reputation for exceptional and affordable horse riding holidays in South Africa. An experience which not only offers you close encounters with game but also an extensive list of rewarding riding experiences including; polocross, western games, jumping, and swimming with your horse.

An unspoilt region with varied topography, from bushveld savannah to rocky outcrops and mountains.

Horses & guides

Managing their horses as a free roaming herd within large tracts of natural pasture, they have wonderful temperaments and a willing nature when being ridden.

With a combination of Thoroughbreds, Arabs, Boerperds, Welsh ponies and various crossbreds ranging from 13.2 to 17.2 hh, each with a distinct personality from gentle natured and eager to please, to the more competitive and energetic.

Rides are taken with two guides; who will lead you through the bush, and share with you their knowledge of the bush, the wildlife and South Africa. Many of the guides have lived on the farm for generations and are an integral part of our community with a unique knowledge of the area.

Horizon has captured that early camp atmosphere in Camp Davidson, with beautiful decked canvas tents nestled amongst the sandstone ridges overlooking game filled valleys. Warm, friendly hospitality with authentic and varied riding experiences are key ingredients that result in Horizon having one of the highest return rates of satisfied guests.

The camp has wonderful panoramic view of the central highlands of the Waterberg massif, while overlooking the picturesque Sunset Lake. Botswana

Operating riding safaris in the vast Mashatu Game Reserve in the Tuli Block of south eastern Botswana, Horizon Horseback Mashatu is situated in an area of great diversity and magnificent vistas.

With ancient civilisations and dramatic rock formations which are bordered in the south by 'the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees'. Aptly named the Land of the Giants for its baobab studded plains and large herds of elephant.

They offer two safaris to choose from the mobile seven night Tuli Safari, ending each riding day in comfortable beds, cosy duvets, hot showers and fine dining in lovely settings.

Highlight of the safaris are two nights spent sleeping out under the stars in an old tribal court called the Kgotla, and two nights in Tree Camp, which is a camp on a deck wrapped around the trunks of a giant mashatu and two ancient leadwood trees.

The ride covers approximately 120 miles over the course of the week and is scheduled Sunday to Sunday, year round.

Alternatively try an African Explorer Safari ride which combines four nights at Horizon Horseback South Africa and three nights in Botswana at our luxurious Two Mashatus camp.
